I just realized that I started this Giant Granny Square on January 9, 2010, a year ago! I would have finished it sooner, but crocheting always hurts my hands and arms. I was afraid I could not do anything else either, and had to put it aside. Then it got put into storage with all the other stuff, but now it's done!
This would be a perfect project for stash busting, but I had some yarn reserved for a Mosaic knit blanket, which I did not do, so I used this yarn for my Granny Square. It was like an epidemic going around about a year ago. All over flickr I saw them emerging in my contacts photostreams, and of course on Ravelry too. The pull was too strong, so I joined in.
I don't know anymore which one, but I found a tutorial on youtube on how to crochet IN the ends while working on it, so I had only to weave in the last end. So easy, and wonderful!
Here you can see the beginning/end of the rounds. I wanted it to be reversible, so I did not go round, and round, but turned around after each round was completed. It's a small thing, nobody would look that closely, I think, unless I'll point it out.
The outside photos look a little washed out, but it's between the inside/outside photos, where the real colors are. I love the inside photos more, because it really looks warm and comfortable, which it is. Happy was not interested in the blanket at all.
I was able to reserve some red yarn balls for the last round before I did the edge in natural white. I love the contrast.
Well, not all the way around, but orangy color was good too. It's 63" x 69" big! I have no idea why it's not more square, but it's very stretchy. I steam blocked it, that may have been a reason for the weird size. I wanted it really big, and it was so comfortable to crochet the last rounds, while it was resting on my lap, and legs, and even the toes where covered. That would have been not as nice, had I finished it during summer time.
I used all together 37 balls of Jojoland Rhythm in the colors M24 and 002 for this. It's 100% wool. This amounts to 4070yds/3721.6m.
start-finish: Jan. 9 - Dec. 27, 2010.
I only had to do the last 15 rounds to finish it off, and I'm glad it's done. I could not have done more, since my hands, and arms up to the elbows started to hurt again.

Want to see what I'm working on right now?
But I've still got a couple of other FO's to show, until next time, happy crafting!

It is so gorgeous, it looks so warm and cosy and I think turning to make both sides the same is so clever and crocheting in the ends as you go must be a wonderful feeling at the end!! I love the contrast of the white and the warm reds. I expect you were paying attention to the blanket and not to Happy!!! I would not like to be under the rug now in Summer. That's a lot of kilometres!!
The blanket looks lovely!
Love the big granny square! A friend of mine is going to teach me how to crochet this year. She's working on a big granny square baby blanket right now. I want to be able to do granny squares and ripple afghans.
Its beautiful and a heck of a lot of yardage!
Loving that sock pattern, can't wait to see it worked up.
The blanket is gorgeous and I admire your patience in getting it done, I think I would have given up ages ago. Looking forward to seeing the socks as well, the colours are lovely.
This blanket looks just great! Warm indeed. And your new socks look promising too! Could put two more things on my to do list now...
That blanket is gorgeous! Perfect for the winter weather we are experiencing now! The colours are so sumptuous and warm. Lots of people think crochet blankets aren't warm because of the holes, but I bet that one is cozy!
What method did you use to work the ends in while crocheting? That's the main reason I don't make granny squares!
love the blanket--it looks so cozy and big!
Wow!!! That's amazing!
Your blanket looks so warm and comfy especially for the current weather. I like the heathery look of the Jojoland Rythym.
I haven't crocheted in years but I love this idea for a stash buster.
Beautiful granny square. It's funny, since that is mostly all I crocheted before I came to knitting. Is that a sweet paprika design? i really like it!
Gorgeous blanket! Just don't leave it on the couch where the dogs can get to it and 'dig' to make it even more comfortable. Ask me how I know.
Monika - that is gorgeous.
4000 + yards !!! You are a persistent knitter!

I still like my giant granny square blanket though pretty much only Nimitz uses it now. It's funny because I didn't notice any others until after I finished mine. I definitely tend to prefer crochet for a good, warm afghan and it's even better to do it in winter!
Gorgeous blanket!!
That blanket is beautiful, what a great job. Smart too looking up how to weave in the ends as you go, must've been a a real sense of accomplishment you felt when you got it done ... and were really DONE!
You have no idea how much I love that blanket!
That's it - I'm learning to crochet!
That is a beautiful blanket, inspiring me to crochet!
Such attractive colours. I just love Happy's complete non-interest, which is surely better than him trying to 'play' with it.
Beautiful, beautiful blanket! It must've been quite a job to block it, given its generous size. Well done.
Love your Giant Granny. I started one too about a year ago but mine is not even half-finished. I want to get it out now. I tend to work on it when I'm tired and need some comfort crochet as I find trebles very relaxing. Been too busy knitting/designing last year to finish the Giant Granny.
What yarn/colors did you use in your granny blanket? I love them!
puh, fleißig - fleißig!
Wie groß ist denn dein Granny Square?
Grüßle, die Bea
