Skunked!

Well, baby skunks, two of them are still around, and this time on our side of the fence. I didn't think they are still there, since the trap with mom was gone, and I didn't see the babies all day.

This evening, I wanted to let the dogs out for one last run around, when they discovered the skunks, and this time Happy was not so smart after all. He barked at them, and Denny right beside him. My son went to grab them and got sprayed too. Those suckers stink!

We bathed them outside, and now they are awaiting more potent stuff to de-skunk them. They are in their crates without a blanket. They are not amused.

My son's gone to fetch some things. We'll need new collars too. I lost some old towels, and David's T-shirt and pants. So the fun is not over for us yet. The pups don't like to be bathed, and Happy gave us a lot of trouble, slipped out of his collar, and we had to catch him again. Next round of baths will be in my bath tub. Oh joy!

My son's furious, and in a bad mood.

And we thought today was a good day until this happened.

I so sorry but this is pretty funny too. Poor pups and David too! I hope you can all sleep tonight through the stink.

Both my dogs have been skunked - the only thing that works is tomato paste all over in the bath; your son also. Will take a day to have the stench removed

Good luck deskunking everyone.

Ich hoffe, du bist mir nicht böse, wenn ich vor dem Monitor gegrinst habe.

Viel Spaß beim Hundebaden wünscht

I have heard that tomato juice works well to remove skunk spray from dogs. Sorry for the bad luck!

Oh my! So sorry! My dog got skunked once. My husband (who usually is a really smart person) let him back in the house!! The dog took a direct hit to the face which totally (temporarily) blinded him so he ran around the house rubbing his face on everything! Imagine a 50 pound dog running wild in your house, unable to see, frantically wiping skunk scuzz all over your furniture! It was awful. I ended up taking him to our vet/groomer and they spent the day bathing him till he didn't stink anymore. They told me it took 4 baths!! I spent the day getting the stink out of our furniture and carpeting. Not fun at all. Good luck!!!

Oh, no!! I've got a thing for Billy the Exterminator on A&E. He said the best thing for skunk odor removal is liquid soap, baking soda, and vinegar, I think. I found that on Google, too, but some places said peroxide instead of vinegar, but it said to sub in vinegar if you didn't want your animal's fur to bleach.

tomato juice or paste. FAST!

I used v8 in a spray bottle on my cat once when he got skunked. Worked like charm.

For me (and the dogs, long haired, unfortunately) dumping pure tomato juice on them and really rubbing it into their fur worked.

This sucks. I'm so sorry...

ack what a mess!!
I hope the bathing works. Mum and Dad dog was skunked many a time and tomato juice baths seemed to work too.

Oh, that sucks! Did you try hydrogen peroxide? I had to go to Shopper's Drug Mart at 11pm one night and cleared them out of it. I can't remember, but I think you might add baking soda. You can put a thick layer of baking soda on a wet object (like a couch), and when it's dry, vacuum it up. We're just dealing with mud here!

This could have been ME! Have just missed being sprayed twice recently and finally, we shot and killed our skunk! Hate to kill anything but just had to. I feel your pain / smell your aroma / or whatever!

I've heard the problem with getting sprayed is that the spray decomposes over time...and thus you have to go through the deskunking process again and again because the smell comes back.

It's a molecular change as it decomposes...so you use all the things to get rid of the smell, then what a bit and do it again, repeat over and over.

I think I saw the best info on how to deal with it from TERRIERMAN.COM. He has JRTs and hunts with them. JRTs will run into a skunk down a pipe...you actually have to get to them ASAP cause the spray can kill them without the flow of oxygen to dilute it.

Good luck!!
