Garter Yoke Cardigan - again!
this is the actual color - oatmeal - yummy
I can't quite believe it myself, but here it is: the Garter Yoke Cardigan! I started this in May, and was hoping to get it done in time for the cold weather. Well, it's done now, and it's still the same year, so that's good. There are however good news, and bad news.
The good news: I love it! I love the color, the antler buttons, the drape, and how my bust shaping turned out right.
The bad new: It does not fit right. O.K. here's the reason why. After finishing the last stitch on the second sleeve, I threw it in the washing machine to soak, and later drain and spin on LOW, the lowest possible setting. It still came out slightly felted and - a couple of sizes too small, but wait, there's more. When I put it on, it fits perfectly around the shoulders, the bust, and the sleeves are perfect, which means, pre felting, it would have been too big, and the sleeves too long. I can close the first 4 buttons comfortable, but then the trouble start. So I guess you can say, I've got myself a shrug with flaps.
Now I'm wondering, do I do this on purpose, so that I really can't manage to make myself a fitting knit jacket???
I will wear it, at home, where I always intended to wear it anyway. Now I'll need a few month to recover from it, and maybe start another knit jacket for myself. Some day I hope, there will be something fitting like a glove, and I don't mean a glove!
pattern: Garter Yoke Cardigan by Melissa LaBarre, Knit 1 magazine, Fall/Winter 2008
yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino, color: oatmeal
needles: 4.5mm
start-finish: May 18 - December 13
I love the antler buttons! My mom's sent me a baggy full of buttons.
And to top it all off, a Happy picture:
While I'm sitting on the sofa, spinning, he makes himself comfortable in my favorite knitting chair. In a few month he wont fit into it anymore. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed. Come Wednesday he'll be off to the Vet's for an overnight stay. He's going to loose his marbles. I think I'm suffering separation anxiety (me not him), because I can't stand the thought of him having to stay over night.

Oh that's definitely a 'What good luck, what bad luck' story!!
Making a cardi or jacket that fits is very tricky I think.
Lovely buttons. Cute Gnome!!
My word Happy looks so grown up now, and so big. I am always a wreck whenever one of The Labradors goes to Hospital. They let me ring up early and then sneak in to see them!!
I am sure it will all go very well!! Special pats to Happy and to Biko too.
Your cardigan is lovely!
Nice work =)
Beautiful cardigan. I love the color. And, good luck to Happy. This will be harder on Mom than on Happy.
I think it looks beautiful! Plus I never button those bottom buttons anyway ;)
Gunnar had un-decended testicles and when I took him for his surgery the doctor was only able to find one !! that meant a major abdominal surgery to find "the lost boy". Talk about anxiety. It took me over a year to make the appointment. I'm sure Happy will be fine and it will be over before you know it
Maggie will be going for an overnight stay soon, too. Here they don't keep males in all night unless there are complications, but they always keep girls in all night.
aww, that's too bad about the cardigan. i love that pattern--the version i made is one of my favorite sweaters.
That's too bad about the sweater. I find Patons Classic Wool felts if I'm even thinking about water while looking at it.
Beautiful buttons!
Beautiful cardigan and the buttons are really neat. It's so warm in Kolkata that I need the fan here, so no chance of knitting anything right now, although I should get on with my pending project soon. Well, next week may be. Hugs to Happy and Biko.
I love your cardi both color and buttons, and I'm sorry that the fit isn't exactly perfect. Do you think you'll make another one?
Happy looks just like Sam!! I'm glad for health reasons that he's going to lose his 'marbles', but sad for you that he won't be around to do the recycling for a day!
A Shrug with Flaps - LOL Oh I'm sure you are exaggerating! It looks lovely and so warm and cozy so I'm glad you are able to wear and enjoy it around the house.
Your little elf is soooo cute! Be strong it is good for Happy to have this done.
Simply gorgeous!
Loose his "marbles"? Well at least he won't be able to remember what happened to him!
LOOK at all your beautiful knitting. Now here is a case for knitting tea cosies. One can always get a new pot that fits.
Your cardigan is beautiful! Sometimes the simplest patterns and yarn can work so well. It's too bad it doesn't fit quite right though.
Happy doesn't look like a puppy any more in that picture. Great perspective through your spinning wheel (hi Elizabeth!). I'm curious about why he has to stay overnight at the vet's for a neuter. Here, I just take them in the morning and can pick up in the late afternoon as long as there aren't any problems. This is the protocol even for the girls getting spayed.
Will he have to stay over night? Neutering for males is usually pretty minor surgery--at least compared to spaying for females. Well, think how happy Biko will be to get rid of him for an evening! You can give her lots of hugs while you're worrying about him.
I love the cardigan. I'm sorry it didn't turn out! That kind of thing always happens to me. It's really frustrating. But it looks great!
The cardigan is beautiful, looks cozy ! The silver lining is that at least you can still wear it . Lucky you to have all those buttons , they're fabulous !
Happy looks so grown up . I just want to give him a hug , gotta love those ears !
So sorry about the cardigan, however, I love the antler buttons. Good looking out for you by mom and the gnome is lovely. I'm sure you'll get the fit right.
Cardigan looks great! Happy is such a big puppy now! They grow up so quickly.
The cardigan looks great. It's good that it still fits & you can wear it. Happy Holidays.
It's a beautiful cardigan, and I suppose you can always wear it open at the bottom, which seems to be a trend now with knitwear anyway :) Those antler buttons are fantastic!
What a beautiful cardigan. Knitting the right size is rather tricky!
I'm with you - I LOVE that oatmeal color! Yarns like that make me drool! I want to wrap myself in them while they're still in the skeins! LOL! And yes, now that you've sabbotaged your project you can knit yourself another one without guilt! LOL! It's beautiful anyways!
Lovely projects! Love your Gnome!
