Adrenalin

The boys gave me a big fright today. I'm still shaking. They were playing, and I was spinning, when Denny started to squeal, and Happy growled like a mad dog. At first I thought they started a real nasty fight, but soon discovered that it was something else.

Denny likes to grab Happy's collar and tug. This time his jaw got stuck somehow. It must have hurt, and Happy got mad, so Denny rolled on his back to be submissive, but that twisted the collar even more. Happy could hardly breath, and was standing over Denny, who squealed even more. I could not get to the snap, the collar was so tight, and I also couldn't find it. I think it was were Denny got stuck. Somehow I got his jaw loose, and they fell apart.

Denny had emptied his anal glands in fear. I took off the collars of both of them and put them in their crates to recover. When I let them out again, Denny immediately went into play position. They sniffed each other gingerly, and licked their muzzles, and finally tails wagged again, and they settled down underneath my desk.

I think I've never heard or seen such a horrible scene. From now on, they wont be wearing collars inside the house., that's for sure.

Thank god no one got hurt. Very brave "mother" is not easy to step in when the dogs are angry or scared

That must have been very scary for you and the dogs! The poor boys, I'm glad they're okay.

Oh, gosh...I'm so glad they are okay. Good idea to give them a time out.

I once had a kitten who got into my yarn when I was at work one day. I came home to a kitten with a paw the size of a baseball glove where he'd got yarn knotted around it and chewed it off. It was so tight and his paw was so swollen I could barely even see the yarn. I sat with nail clippers, gingerly snipping one thread at a time till I could get it off, then must have massaged his paw for an hour till the swelling went down. Amazing thing was, he let me do all that without a struggle. Poor little guy...

Hi, Love to read your blog but with dogs they need to have the breakaway collars - sorry to say but our dog did not survive this problem. Better to lose a few dollars then your beloved pet.

Tank has been in the same position as Denny at the dog park. This is why I've started to take off his collar as soon as I get there. People think I'm nuts, but I've heard horor stories (including collars caught on fences).

Glad you were sitting right there! :)

Thank goodness it all worked out OK, you must have been so frightened for them, and poor Happy and Denny. I am so glad they are fine. The Labradors never wear their collars at home because I worry they will get caught on something.

OMG how fortunate you were there when it happened!!!! We leave the leash and prong collar on "you know who" at all times. Had another lesson this morning - the trainer thinks he doesn't respect me as boss. We have ordered a bark collar for night wear. I'm just a basket case from all the lack of sleep.

Poor you! What a scare! I'm glad that you didn't get bitten - always a concern when dogs are scared.

My dogs don't wear collars at home (house and yard) because I have heard too many horror stories about collars and tags getting caught on things.

Was für ein Horrorszenario, ich kann es mir bildlich vorstellen. Ein Glueck, dass die Hunde sich offensichtlich so schnell erholt haben - wir Menschen haben von sowas ja immer etwas laenger "gut".

How fortunate you were there for them! They must have been really scared! Our puppy has recently got his collar caught twice on the dishwasher rack but it hasn't stopped him. Pulled the lower rack right out of the dishwasher! We have to keep his collar on in the house because there's too high of chance the kids might let him out the front door and it has his name/number stitched on it. But we're also dealing with only one dog; you're very brave in many ways!

Yikes! I would have panicked too, and banished collar wearing inside the house as well.

I'm glad the pups are OK and that it wasn't anything more serious than an accident.

Our doggie daycare takes all of the collars off the dogs after they had two get stuck together once. I don't keep Nimitz's collar on to keep his hair from matting. I also don't keep collars on the cats after I had one get her jaw trapped in one and the safety release didn't let it off for her. Glad your boys are alright!

Oh that's scary.
When I was a kid one of our cats got trapped under the my dad's recliner and was strangling in some loose threads -we got him out okay, but it sure was panicky.
So glad the boys are okay.
