Maria & Joseph & a little peanut!

Since this little family landed safely in the arms of my parents, I can show you the pictures. This is a mini nativity scene. The booklet shows sheep, a donkey, shepherds, and kings, and a beautiful angel as well. I don't know yet, if I will ever knit all of them. That's it for now though. It was fun, but I wish Alan Dart would construct his figures more to be knit in the round. All those seams are killing me! I made Mary's feet, but she would not stand on them, so I left them off, and didn't bother to make Joseph's. Mary's neck was so long, I had to make a necklace to keep it straight, and also I had to put a wooden skewer from head to bottom. Gory work, but it worked.

I like Joseph's beard. The best use for fuzzy fun fur is for knitted toys.

Mary's head wobbled from side to side, and back and forth, I had to do something. I felt quite clever when I came up with this little necklace. ;o) Mary also has hair, it's a pity one can't see it because of the headscarf.

Making Baby Jesus was fun. He does remind me of a peanut.

pattern: Nativity Scene by Alan Dart; last year I found this little booklet in one of my LYS.

yarn: Valley Yarns Longmeadow, 60% cotton, 40% microfiber (in the future I'll make toys with wool)

needle: 3mm

size: they are about 12 1/2 inches high

That is such a neat set... They turned out great! Are the animals done in the same kinda shape?

They are too cute. You put lots of work into them having to sew them all together and stuff. Working them in a round would be easier.

How adorable! I think they're just cute. How long did it take for you to knit them?? I love the little peanut :D. Actually, he'd be really cute as a pin. Put some brown yarn behind him, and make it look like hay, it'd be a great pin.

Really incredible. Such beautiful finishing - your parents must have been amazed at how nice the detailing is. I also like the beard - so perfect. A favorite memory of mine is the Christmas we spent in South America and all the beautiful nativity scenes. Very different than Christmas in LA.

I love them! I once worked in a hospital where at Christmas they displayed a personal collection of over 300 nativities. These are much sweeter!

These are so cute Monika but tell me, were there German Shepherds in Bethlehem? :)

We obviously have the same taste! I posted a picture of Mary, Joseph, Peanut and Hagrid the King in August! I found knitting them in the round quite straight forward using the toe-up sock method the same as I did for the Tomte. One of these days I'll knit a couple more Kings...

Liebe Monika,

Your knited figures are fabulous! I'm not sure I'd have the patience to make them, but I'm so happy for you that they turned out wonderfully. Your parents must absolutely love them :)

So beautiful, every year I am thinking about doing it for myself, and every year something else turns me on.
By the way, saw you knitting the same sock as I do, from sockamania. Mine is deep red.

Incredible! This would be the most incredible Christmas gift or wedding gift. Too bad my fingers don't think they could do it. I am impressed!

Liebe Monika,

Sorry, but religion makes me sick now, thanks to the Bush administration. Hate to see a combination of knitting, which I like, and religion, which I abhor, cuz it kind of takes the joy out of my knitting....

The white German Shepherd is never mentioned in the Nativity story, but of course he was there. ;-)
Very, very cute, Monika! I hope you do get around to knitting the rest of the set some day. Maybe you can add one or two figures every year.
